Gas, Bloating and a "Fuzzy" Tongue: What Your Bowels Are Telling You

digestion gut health metabolic assessment Oct 31, 2026

Bowels that never feel quite empty. Gas that clears a room. Belly pain that eases once you go. Swinging between constipation and diarrhea. A coated, "fuzzy" tongue in the morning.

Most people shrug these off as "just how my stomach is." In my clinic, I treat them as signals. Together, they often point to one place: the balance of bacteria in your large intestine.

Your gut is a garden

Your large intestine (colon) is home to trillions of bacteria. Think of it like a garden. When the helpful plants are thriving, they crowd out the weeds. When the balance tips, the weeds take over, and you feel it.

These bacteria matter well beyond your bowels. They help make some vitamins, train your immune system, and send signals that affect your energy and mood. When the garden is out of balance, the effects can show up far from your gut.

Common reasons the balance tips

  • A diet low in vegetables and fiber, the food your good bacteria live on
  • Rounds of antibiotics
  • Ongoing stress
  • Too little water or movement
  • Frequent laxative use
  • Problems further up the digestive tract, like low stomach acid or weak digestive enzymes

See a doctor promptly if you have:

Some bowel symptoms aren't a "balance" problem and shouldn't wait:

  • Blood in your stool, or black, tarry stools
  • Weight loss you can't explain
  • A change in bowel habits lasting more than a few weeks, especially if you're over 45
  • Severe or worsening belly pain
  • Fever with diarrhea, or diarrhea lasting more than a few days

Want to know where you stand?

The symptoms above are one section of the Metabolic Assessment Form, the same symptom questionnaire my functional medicine patients fill out. It covers 19 areas, from digestion and blood sugar to stress hormones, thyroid and sex hormones, and shows you which ones are asking for attention.

Get the free Metabolic Assessment Form and a simple scoring sheet. Then I'll walk you through one section a week by email, including what blood work can show and what you can try on your own.
